@atulbigdance is an amazing dance choreographer in India. We found his mission to unite others and bring a more holistic dance experience to India, inspiring.
How did this all come about? What or who inspired you?
During my time training in New York, I saw a huge gap in the dance education module in India. I wanted to come back and fill that gap, so I started my dream venture – Big Dance Centre.
Through his dance school, Big Dance Centre, Atul has been able to create a curriculum that encompasses training in dance styles from all over the world that many talented dancers in India don’t get the opportunity to learn.
From a creative standpoint, what do you give? What’s the message behind your creativity?
My professional journey has been dedicated to sharing my art with others and providing the right education and opportunities to the next generation. India has so much talent, but many don’t have the resources to pursue that talent. If I can contribute to generating work opportunities through dance, it can help shape the lives of many young talented artists in my country.
Through my creative work, I always express that dance styles and genres often divide people; but I want my art to be about more than just steps, a movement that unites.
I’ve been inspired by my teacher, Mr. Santosh Nair, who trained me in Indian Contemporary and Mayurbhanj Chhau. He taught me to embrace our Indian culture and styles. In the U.S., I was inspired by legendary teachers like Mia Michaels, Jeff Amsden and even my friend Shaun Evaristo who redefined the idea of dance studios and entrepreneurship. My inspiration comes from both these ideologies and cultures.
What role does instax play in your creative process?
As a music video choreographer, a large part of my process is to create choreography for the camera. Designing choreography that’s more than just “steps” but imagining movement, transitions, compositions and visuals from the perspective of a lens. Instax helps me look at the world around me from that perspective.
Do you have any current plans to take this to the next level? If so, what’s that next level look like for you?
I’m always thinking of what’s next! This year has shown the importance of the virtual world. I’m building a virtual dance app which will have tutorials, live classes, dance courses and podcasts. I want to target dancers in all parts of India and the world to ensure they get to train with the best educators nationally and internationally.
What’s your go to snack when you’re creating?
Honestly, when I'm creating I often even forget to eat!
